YogaWoman
This week I got the opportunity to see the new film YogaWoman.
It was really fun. A few friends from my yoga studio, NC Yoga, went out for fish tacos and then popped on over to see the film put on by NoDa Yoga and the Women Centered Art Co-Op. The margaritas were yummy and I got to try the Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout which was super nomalicious. It was a good time all around.
The modern yoga movement has been hijacked by women. Hijacking isn’t always a bad thing, in my opinion, however I do feel that contemporary western men are missing out on the benefits a yoga practice can give them in so many aspects of their lives.
Some of the things that most benefit women from yoga is it’s pre and post natal care (not only does it help with the delivery, but it helps with the post-partum depression and recovering your body). I don’t talk a lot about having children, but I strongly feel that yoga is a far superior method to preparing for having a child than Lamaze. As women, we go to the doctor more frequently than our male counterparts, a lot of that has to do with being the ones who bear the offspring. Our systems have a little more “going on”, even if we choose to not have children.
Yoga helps with a lot of the reasons women require the assistance of physicians in our lives. From our cycles to depression and other common illnesses, yoga helps us cope, treat, and improve the quality of our lives. I think that this hijacking has been the best thing to happen to the modern culture of women. I look forward to what the future brings in yoga.
One of my theories about this movement is that while women have dominated it in our culture, a common trait among trends is that the men’s world follows suit shortly after. I’m guessing that in a few years the men’s movement for yoga will have grown significantly. Everything is cyclical…it was a masculine practice, now it’s considered more feminine but I hope to see it balancing out sometime in the near future.
I welcome the time when more of my male friends can understand the benefits yoga can provide one’s life. Until then, I am finding a new way to connect with women as I enter my 30′s decade. The movie did a good job rounding up the so very many reasons yoga has spoken so strongly to the contemporary women. Whether you believe in the spiritual aspects, the physical aspects or both…yoga can be a powerful motivator for change in your life, for the better.
So yeah, yoga is awesome and stuff. You know the drill…this is turning out to be a really great yoga month for me, I hope you’ll give it a try for a month and see if it has an impact on your life as well. I think the only thing missing from Thursday night was….CUPCAKES!
