40 best cupcake-frosting combinations of all time

That is the bold claim being made over at The Stir. Here's a sample of the list (starting with ones I personally find interesting):

    26. Bacon cupcakes with maple frosting

    27. Dark chocolate cupcakes with mint frosting

    28. Oatmeal cupcakes with white chocolate frosting

    29. Espresso cupcakes with chocolate frosting

    30. Cherry vanilla cupcakes with white chocolate frosting

    31. Caramel apple cupcakes with cinnamon cream frosting

    32. German chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting

    33. OIive oil cupcakes with lemon-thyme frosting

    34. Green tea cupcakes with chocolate frosting

    35. Butternut squash cupcakes with cream cheese frosting

After five-plus years of cupcake blogging, my take is that it's all subjective. There can never be a best. For instance, I don't as a rule like cream cheese frosting or red velvet cupcakes, but tons of people do. It's all good. They are cupcakes, after all. What do you think?

    Strange Brew

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has banned taste contests for home-brewed beer, as well as home-brew club tasting nights. It has even barred people from taking home-brewed beer to a friend's home to drink. The bans are part of a reinterpretation of a state law that bars unlicensed brewers from brewing beer except for "home consumption." Because of the new ruling, the Oregon State Fair has canceled this year's beer and wine competitions.

Why Bad 3D, Not 3D Glasses, Gives You Headaches

Barence writes "The most common complaint about 3D is that the glasses give you a headache, but that's not actually true, according to the man who teaches the pros how to make better 3D. Speaking at the BBC in London, Buzz Hays, chief instructor for the Sony 3D Technology Center in Culver City, California, explained: 'It's not the technology's fault, it's really the content that can cause these problems. It's easy to make 3D but it's hard to make it good — and by "good" I mean taking care to make sure that this isn't going to cause eyestrain.' He went on to detail some of the mistakes made by inexperienced 3D film makers, from poor composition of shots, through uncomfortable convergence settings, to overuse of on-set monitors without viewing their content on a big screen. But the biggest admission Buzz made was that not even the 'experts' know all the tricks yet, which is why 3D should only get better from here. In the same seminar, Buzz also explained why 3D glasses are here to stay — at least for the next few years."

    CoutureLust: Steam Trunk Couture

I'm beside myself with excitement to bring you the latest CoutureLust profile ~ it's been some time in the making. Meet Juniper Lindquist Fletcher, who along with her husband Christian Fletcher, brings us Steam Trunk Couture!

(Juniper and Christian in 2007 / Photo: Derick Ion)

I've long been enamoured of Juniper and Christian's excellent design-work ~ the attention to detail, perfect blend of modern tribal circus sensibility with vintage charm... every piece of theirs I've seen is glorious.

(Steam Punk Gown / Model: Ashley Knight / Photo: Sequoia Emmanuelle)

Juniper and Christian are currently hard at work on their latest creation... a baby, due any day now. Finger crossed that line of steamy baby-wear is in the works! And there are already heart-poundingly hot designs for men in their line ~ seen gracing the likes of Sidecar Tommy of Beats Antique.

(Sidecar Tommy in Steam Trunk / Photo: Derick Ion)

Without further ado, the lovely Ms. Juniper.

How would you describe yourself and your style of work?

I consider myself a renaissance woman. Whether it is costume & clothing or painting & sculpting, I love the process of manifesting dreams into this plane of reality. These days with Steam Trunk at the forefront of my creative wiles, I design garments and accessories that embody facets of Victorian and Retro fashion, yet are modern and street smart for today’s fast times. Steam Trunk fashion can be noted as “Antique street-wear”.

(Model: Ukushu Kazakova / Photo: Sequoia Emmanuelle)

    Where do you find inspiration?

Fortunately all through my life, artists have surrounded me and craftspeople that support the belief that we are capable of creating anything our minds can dream up. Whimsical moments, vintage artifacts, beautiful textiles and the divine patterns of nature inspire me.

What do you do besides design amazing clothes?

I am also an illustrator, painter, costume maker, web/graphic designer, body modification artist and soon-to-be-mother!

(Model: Lucid Dawn / Photo: Derick Ion)

What are three things that please you the most in the world?

Three things that please me the most in this world are: the exploration of consciousness, creating with my own hands, and reveling in the love of my husband and community.

How did you get your start making clothes?

I began making clothes for dolls and myself through experimentation and the help of my mother who is also a seamstress. After years of private tailoring, making costumes and having a small hand made line in Canada; I came to the USA to be with the love of my life, Christian. Together we began designing a vision for Steam Trunk in 2007 and produced small numbers of unique garments, which were sold at fashion events and a few local stores. In the years to follow, we were given great support through our community and also formed with the Five and Diamond Collective, who has been a strong factor in our growth as a company.

What piece of work are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my “Venus” Gown, which is a hand detailed couture silk and taffeta piece. This is a piece from a limited collection created in collaboration with Chrystie Cappelli and my husband Christian for the most recent fashion show we presented at the W Hotel in SF.

Where can we find your line?

Our line can be found at:

    Light My Fire Firesteel

Made in Sweden, the Light My Fire firesteels are a remake of a classic. Use them to light dry tinder if you are in Daniel Boone mode. For the rest of us, they cast off a perfect spark to light any sort of gas camp stove, from the 2 burner Coleman car camp special to the micro backpack models. They also work for the previously CT reviewed DIY alcohol stoves.

Firesteels come in 2 sizes, small for survival-backpacking and a slightly larger size for those other times. Some of the most distinctive advantages are that it works when wet, it has no moving parts, no fuel to run out of, and lasts nearly 3,000 strikes.

I've used them for everything from car camping in the VW camper van to mountaineering stoves on Rainier climbs and they always are flawless. The smaller one always has a place in my first aid / survival kit; the larger one comes on car camping trips.

    Novus Plastic Polish

I’ve found that Novus plastic polish works very well for the sorts of things that readers wondered if the previously reviewed 3M Headlight Polishing Kit worked on. I use it when cleaning and removing scratches from pinball machine parts and have had a lot of success polishing things ranging from cell phone displays to sunglasses.

There are three different compounds: #3 for dealing with big scratches, #2 for normal/light scratches, and #1 for a basic clean. #2 does the job for just about everything I’ve used it on. Available in 2-oz, 8-oz and half-gallon bottles. I’ve had 8-oz bottles of #1 and #2 that have lasted me several years of occasional use. I’d expect the half-gallon to last practically forever. Wonderful stuff.

Slow Cooker Boston Tea (book club) Punch Recipe

My friend Barbara wrote right away after I posted that I was interested in starting a book club. She told me that I must make her "famous" Boston Tea that she always serves to her book club.

Now this is a hot drink, which sounds weird in the middle of July, but I found it quite refreshing to sip on out in the yard after dinner.

    Be careful.

    this is um, powerful stuff.

    The Ingredients.
    serves 4

    2 cups water
    2 black tea bags
    1/2 cup rum
    2 ounces Triple Sec
    2 tablespoons sugar
8 lemon slices (about 2 lemons)

    The Directions.

Use a 2 quart slow cooker. Put water into your slow cooker, and add the tea bags. Pour in the rum and triple sec. Stir in the sugar. Wash lemons well, slice, and float the slices on top. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours, or on high for about 2 hours. When thoroughly hot, remove tea bags (you can squeeze them just a bit to get out more tea flavor, if you'd like) and discard. Ladle into pretty mugs and serve.

    The Verdict.

Barbara, thank you for sharing your book club tea punch! I'm thinking that the book clubs I've attended in the past have been kind of boring, but maybe the problem was that we never had anything like this to sip on!

My friends loved this. Maybe even a bit too much.

    Aspirational Book #124

    Shared by Garland
i need to get this book, again...

I know I'm late to this party (CRAFT reviewed this a year ago!) but I just bought Digital Textile Design:

On first pass through (very briefly!) it looks fantastic. Just the right blend of inspirational and "how-to-do-it-ness."

Digital textile printing is my "someday" hobby -- sewing is very rewarding, of course, but I've gotten into a bit of a rut where I make the same things (cough, Heidi, cough) over and over again, because at the end of the day what I really want is a wearable garment. Right now the limiting factor for me is fabric -- can I find fabric I love? That's where textile printing comes in -- it holds the promise of being able to get ANYTHING I want, fabric-wise ... but with a steep learning curve.

So as a kind of down-payment on that someday-when-I-have-time-to-design-fabric, I've been amassing some books, including this one. Anything else I should be investing in? (I already have a [very old] copy of Photoshop and Illustrator.)

i need to get this book, again...

Small Business Data Storage: Review of HP X310 Data Vault

Storing data is not a sexy subject.  Sure, we all need to store, manage and protect our computer data, but we don’t need to talk a lot about it. Buy a hard drive or server and store your stuff.  Right?  Simple enough in concept, however the truth is it has never been an easy process. The new HP StorageWorks X310 Data Vault aims to do just that:  Make data storage, backup, and sharing effortless.

I received a temporary review unit from HP last month and thought I would have my work cut out for me in setting it up and configuring it. Frankly, I was blown away with how easy it really was.  I turned on the unit, followed a few simple steps and my laptop and desktop could both connect to the X310.  As most readers know, HP is also a sponsor of this site.

Designed for SMBs with limited IT staff, the new X310 simplifies data backup.  It is ideal for any small or midsize business that has more than one machine and wants to save time and money on a new or additional backup system.

    What I liked:

    • The Data Vault works incredibly well with the Windows Home Server operating system.  The user-friendly interface to configure the Windows Home Server and link machines to it is a no-brainer.
    • You can automate a daily backup for up to 10 PC clients in addition to Macs, on one Data Vault device and internally expand its total storage to 7 terabytes (that’s roughly 1,000 Gigabytes).  To be clearer, once your device comes in range of the wireless server it can automatically start backing up files.
    • Simply plug your USB hard drive or flash drive directly into any USB port on the HP Data Vault and you can move files directly on or off the device.

    What I didn’t like:

This is not HP’s fault, but I couldn’t get it to work with my wireless router and thus get access to the Data Vault from remote locations anywhere on the internet.  Most companies won’t have this problem if their wireless configuration is newer than 4 years old.  In my mind, remote access is hugely helpful and a money saver if you want an alternative to the ubiquitous web-based services at X dollars a year.

As a quick aside, once you do have this working, you can share local and remote files through a custom URL that is accessible from any web browser. What a great way to improve collaboration for you and your staff.

Hard drives and other digital storage media are cheap. You can’t afford not to have a backup in place and HP makes it easier than ever with their new X310 Data Vault.  The install and configuration for PCs is exceptional and the price point affordable if you have more than one machine.  It is worth a serious look.

Learn more about the HP StorageWorks X310 Data Vault.

Even better, to celebrate the show's premiere, the folks at Georgetown Cupcake are offering Real Simple readers this exclusive treat: 25% off the price of any order placed on georgetowncupcake.com between 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.
